Check-In: July 7

What I’m working on: I had a pretty productive week. I got some basic pattern packs up in the shop:

I’m going to shift focus for a little bit and work on some craft projects I’ve been ignoring for a while. Season 8 of Drag Race and the new season of Difficult People are coming to Hulu next week, so TV time will be knitting time.

What I’m watching: We watched the first episode of Harmonquest tonight. If you like table-top roleplaying, Dan Harmon and improv comedy… you’ll love Harmonquest.

What I’m reading: Since I finished our book club book, I got back to reading Secret Wars. It… was very silly. I mean… it was fine? Compared to the super-good X-Men books that were being published at the same time, it looks really dopey. But in a mostly fun way? Except that’s all ruined by the really dumb thing Colossus does. Secret Wars is the reason for his (editorially mandated, I believe?) breakup with Kitty.

See, Pete starts out his time on Battleworld missing Kitty and even thinking of marrying her one day. Then he meets and is healed by an alien lady named Zsaji. Zsaji does not speak a word of English, Russian or any Earth language and spends most of her time making out with Johnny Storm. It’s hinted that her healing powers make dudes fall in love with her. That has to be the case, because she has NO personality other than being pretty and healing. That’s enough for Peter Rasputin, I guess.

Anyway. Dr. Doom absorbs most of the Beyonder’s power and kills all the good guys. Zsaji uses her healing powers to bring Colossus back to life and dies in the process. (It’s heavily implied that she did this only due to the Beyonder’s influence.) He almost doesn’t go back to Earth because he’s so despondent over her sacrifice. The other X-Men tell him to stop being an idiot and get in the car, we’re leaving.

Meanwhile back in the X-Books, where people are written more like actual people than melodramatic caricatures, Pete breaks up with Kitty. And she handles it with AMAZING self-awareness for a 14-year-old. (That’s a poster of Tom Selleck in Kitty and Ilyana’s room. The 80’s were amazing.)

Luckily Kitty’s crazy Uncle Wolverine and Nightcrawler take Colossus out for a drink where they let the Juggernaut beat him up to teach him a lesson. This is exactly how this should have ended.

Anyway. Yeah, the Colossus/Kitty thing was super appropriate as long as he was 19 and she was 14. It needed to end, but’s a little ironic that it ended with Colossus acting like an overly dramatic child and Kitty handling it like an adult.

Check-In: June 9

What I’m working on: I’ve got a couple irons in the fire. Here’s a little sneak peek at something I’m hoping to have up in the shop this weekend:

It’s very fiddly and is taking a while. There might be an easier way to do what I’m doing, but heck if I know what it is.

I’m going to switch gears a little tonight and do something simpler and hopefully have that up in the shop as well. I’m going to try and sprinkle in some quick, simple designs among my more ambitious ones. I don’t want to go too long without putting up new listings. It seems to me that my views on Etsy pick up during those times where I’m actively posting listings. And I don’t want to lose any momentum.

What I’m reading: I checked our latest book club book out of the library more than a week ago, I think, and I still haven’t started it. I’ve gotten terrible about procrastinating on my reading. It doesn’t help that I’m reading so many comics. I’ve put New Mutants aside and I’ve started reading the original Secret Wars because I’m at the point in Uncanny X-Men where that happens.

I’m about to start feeling the anxiety that’s prevented me from reading superhero comics for the past few years. It feels almost impossible to find a self contained story anymore. You have to be keeping up with a half dozen X-Books. Or a handful of Avengers books. And then there are the crossover events with things spread out over ALL the books. Now, I understand I can enjoy the story without EVERY tiny part of it… but I can get kind of a “completion” compulsion. Or maybe it’s a literary FOMO. I don’t know. But all I know is I just wanted to read X-Men from Giant Size #1 and it’s already sent me off on tangents with New Mutants, Secret Wars, and the Wolverine and Magick limited series. And I haven’t even gotten into nearly the quagmire the X-Universe is today. I think I’ll finish Secret Wars, read Uncanny #181 (Young Dragons in Love!) and take a break for a nice novel.

Anyway. Enough about my X-Anxiety. (An-X-iety? I don’t know.)

What I’ve been playing: My husband and I have been playing a lot of  Terraria  together this week. We both like video games, but we rarely play anything together because our tastes don’t overlap in multiplayer games very often. I tend to stick to RPGs, strategy games and simulations. But these open ended building games are perfect. I usually spend my time building houses while he goes out fights things and explores. I join him for a boss fight every now and then, but my main focus is usually interior decoration.

That’s me under the blue and green slime banners in the trophy room. My husband is the blue guy in the horned helmet on the roof.

Check-In: June 2

What I’m working on: I just finished a logo design for my cousin’s church. It’s been a while since I did a logo design, but I’m happy with how it turned out. (They’re happy too, so it all works out.)

I’m starting up some more patterns. I’ve got a couple ideas in mind that are variations on a theme. Right now I’m in the “looking for the right image” phase.

What I’m watching: I finally ran out of Drag Race on Hulu, so I’ve switched back over to Netflix to work on the new season of Kimmy Schmidt. I’m about halfway through. Tituss Burgess is going to get his own show after this, right?

What I’m reading: I picked up our next book club book from the library yesterday, but I haven’t started it yet. I’m still trying to finish up an arc in X-Men and one in New Mutants. It’s my first time reading New Mutants. I started comics back when Gen X was the “trainee team.” I’m fairly familiar with Cannonball and Dani Moonstar, but this is probably the first time I’ve gotten into Karma, Wolfsbane and Sunspot. So far, so good. It feels very early 80’s, but I really enjoy when a comic book feels “of its time.” (We’ll see if I still feel that way when I get into the Cable-heavy 90’s.)

Check-In: May 1

This is what.. two days late? I really don’t have an excuse. I’m kind of pulling myself in too many directions at once right now. Here’s hoping for a little focus next week.

What I’m working on: I had a little fun with some old vintage floral engravings earlier in the week.

And right now I’m working on some more vintage, turn-of-the-last-century flowers:

I’m hoping these will turn into something a little more complex. I’ve been cranking out a lot of basics lately, which is good for building inventory in my shop, but I do need to flex a little more creative muscle.

I’ve been having a whole lot of ideas lately, but I’ve put very little into action. I’ll start something, then go work on something else at the same time… and then drop them both for something completely unnecessary. And in the end I’ve got very little to show for myself.

I’ve got a few ideas for regular features on this blog, so I think I’ll focus on getting at least one of those put into the design phase next week at the very least.

What I’m reading: I’m currently reading Spark Joy, Essential X-Men, Vol. 4, and I’m still working on The Bees. So, you can kind of see where I’m stretching myself a little thin.

What I’m watching: Still watching so much Drag Race. Two more seasons and I’ll be all caught up and then maybe I can catch up on all the OTHER TV I’ve been missing. The husband person, a friend of ours and I went to see Keanu on Friday. It was a fun time. There were kittens.

Check-In: Jan. 28

What I’m working on – I’ve been kind of scattered this week. I’ve scribbled out a few ideas for things to tackle next week and I’ve done some doodles. Mostly doing prep work for bigger things to come. I also scanned some old magazine pages from my mom’s collection to add to my store of reference materials. There were lots of goodies in these.

What I’m watching – New X-Files! And old X-Files! I’ve watched the first two episodes of the new run and I’m pretty happy with it. I think they did a good job of bringing us back to a good (re)starting point without it feeling like a “reboot.” I’m also re-watching the original episodes. I’m currently in the middle of season 4. I didn’t make it much past season 5 back in the day, so we’ll see if I can finish it this time.

What I’m listening toThe X-Files Files! One of my favorite comedians/people, Kumail Nanjiani, has a podcast where he’s going episode by episode of the X-Files. It’s been a fun companion to my re-watch.

What I’m reading – I finished Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds this week. (A Christmas present from my brother-in-law.) I enjoyed it. I’ve never read Scott Pilgrim (shock!), but I might after reading this one. It was good stuff.

What I’m going to do right now – Go to bed. It’s been a long day. My husband (who’s a whole lot more tired that I am right now) had two (yes, two) receptions for the art show he’s doing this month. It was pretty neat to see his art hanging in a gallery and hearing him talk about it to other artists and students. I’ll try and post some of the photos he took after we’ve both gotten some sleep.
